All the teams for Round 6 in the Smithy’s VFL.

He’s back!

One of the most exciting players in the Smithy’s VFL will make his long-awaited return from a knee reconstruction when star small forward Ben Cavarra runs out for Box Hill Hawks against his former AFL club in the Smithy’s VFL top-of-the-table clash with Footscray at Mission Whitten Oval on Sunday.

At the other end of the scale, the Bulldogs will have the services of a future gun in No.6 draft pick Ryley Sanders after surprisingly losing his spot in the Western Bulldogs’ team last week.

And in just as big a surprise, Sydney is set to have the services of club great Luke Parker for the second straight week, with his 34 disposals against the Hawks not enough to win his AFL spot back for the Sydney Derby.

Cavarra hurt his knee at pre-season training last year and hasn’t played since the Hawks’ 2022 elimination final loss to Gold Coast at People First Stadium on August 28, 2022 – an agonising 616-day wait between games for the brilliant goalsneak who has kicked 183 goals in 130 VFL games.

Cavarra is one of six changes to the Box Hill team that overran the Swans, with Josh Bennetts, Cooper Stephens and Clay Tucker back from injury and Max Ramsden and Jai Serong dropped by Hawthorn.

Sam Butler’s season is over after his horrific broken leg that stopped play for 36 minutes last week, while Calsher Dear has earned an AFL debut and Josh Ward was also promoted.

Sanders’ 36 disposals against the AFL Academy last week wasn’t enough to win his AFL spot back and he will make his VFL debut alongside fellow draftee Lachlan Smith and his fellow big man Rory Lobb.

Williamstown regains Frosty Miller medallist Brodie McLaughlin from a groin injury for its important clash with Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Sunday.

McLaughlin hasn’t played since breaking down in the second quarter against Coburg on Good Friday, with his return – and that of Aiden Bonar (hamstring) being a welcome one for the Seagulls as they lose Fin O’Dwyer and Mitch Cox to concussion and Blake Coleman to a hamstring injury.

The Demons made just one change, with Brayden Laplanche returning for the rested Leo Connolly.

North Melbourne has remarkably changed almost half its team as it tries to get its season back on track in an intriguing clash with Sandringham at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

The Kangaroos have made 10 changes to the team that lost to GWS in Sydney last week, with VFL star Sam Lowson and Young Guns representative Cooper Lord joined by eight AFL-listed players returning to action.

The experienced Hugh Greenwood heads that list, with Will Phillips, Eddie Ford, Sydney recruit Dylan Stephens and Richmond signing Biggie Nyuon also coming down from the AFL and Cooper Harvey and Wil Dawson returning from injury.

Liam Shiels, Jaidyn Stephenson and Jackson Archer were promoted, luckless youngster Brayden George has dislocated his shoulder and ruckman Hamish Free is in concussion protocols.

St Kilda’s Hunter Clark returns from a long-term injury for the Zebras, who have named an imposing forward line that includes AFL omissions Cooper Sharman and Anthony Caminiti along with injury returnees Max Heath and Hugo Hall-Kahan, with Jack Hayes and Angus Hastie having been promoted.

Parker’s near best-afield showing in his first State league game for 12 years was not enough to earn him an AFL recall in a selection stunner and he will face the Giants in the VFL Derby alongside unlucky AFL omission Braeden Campbell, who needs some game-time after a run as the substitute, with the Swans losing Corey Warner (ankle) and Indhi Kirk (concussion).

The Giants regain Leek Aleer and Xavier O’Halloran from AFL duties, while draftee Phoenix Gothard is also back on deck.

Nathan Kreuger returns from a hamstring injury for his first hitout of the season as Collingwood travels to Southport to take on the Sharks at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

The luckless key forward broke down 12 days before the Magpies’ AFL season-opener against GWS, but his return comes a couple of weeks ahead of schedule and is welcomed given the losses of Ben Crocker (hamstring) and Jack Hutchinson (managed) from the forward.

The Magpies also lose Lachie Sullivan to a years-overdue AFL debut, fellow promotion Oleg Markov and midfielder Ned Long, with vice-captain Jedd Longmire and key forward Patrick Farrant among the inclusions against the unchanged Sharks.

Coburg regains star midfielder Hugo Bromell from suspension for its clash with Richmond and gives debuts to South Morang defender Deacon Kalpakis and Doutta Stars small forward Giacomo Thomas, but loses Kyle Weightman to suspension.

The Tigers also have two debutants in Dromana’s Nick Collier and Highett’s Tom McCarthy, while Kane McAuliffe and James Trezise also return, but their injury curse has worsened with Will Bravo becoming the third ACL victim in just two weeks.

Brisbane Lions defender/ruckman Zane Zakostelsky will make his VFL debut in their QClash against Gold Coast after the No.51 selection overcame a groin injury, with Darcy Fort heading the other inclusions to replace AFL debutant Bruce Reville, Harry Sharp, James Madden and Henry Smith.

The Suns have a debutant in Academy product Lucas Snowball from Surfers Paradise, with Sam Day, Connor Budarick and Darcy Macpherson replacing Ben Long, Brandon Ellis and Oskar Faulkhead.

Werribee loses Daly Andrews for six weeks with a knee injury and Corey Preston for a week for headbutting former teammate Jack Toner, with Charlie Byrne and third-generation Tiger Jake Smith to make their club debuts against a Carlton team that regains best-and-fairest winner Jaxon Binns and three other AFL omissions.

Port Melbourne gets back Fraser Rosman from injury and Cody Henness from suspension for its trip to the Northern Bullants, who get John Roumeliotis from a ban and give a debut to Airport West’s Corey Barbaro.

However the Bullants lose Sam Hayes, Max Johnson, Rohan McKenzie and Dane Whitnall to injury – the son of Carlton star Lance Whitnall suffering a broken nose, broken ribs and a punctured lung in two separate collisions on his debut.

Matt Nelson, the brother of Carlton and former Coburg player Luke, makes his VFL debut for Frankston’s trip to Geelong, which loses Gary Rohan, Toby Conway and Jhye Clark but gains Mark O’Connor, James Willis and Marcus Herbert.

All matches in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will broadcast select matches live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7plus nationally. This week’s broadcast game will be Sandringham vs North Melbourne.
